Ferro silicon is an alloy of iron and silicon, usually containing 15-90% silicon. It contains a high proportion of iron silicide.
Ferro silicon is produced by reducing silica or sand with coke in the presence of iron. The typical source of iron is scrap iron or mill scale. Ferrosilicon with a silicon content up to about 15% is made in blast furnaces lined with acidic refractory bricks.
FeSi with a higher silicon content is made in electric arc furnaces. Common formulations on the market are Iron Silicon Alloy containing 15%, 45%, 75%, and 90% silicon. The rest is iron, with about 2% consisting of other elements such as aluminum and calcium. Excess silica is used to prevent the formation of silicon carbide. Microsilica is a useful by-product.
